You likely noticed that atmospheric layers are defined by temperature. Temperature decreases with increasing altitude in the troposphere, but increases with altitude in the stratosphere.

Question for Thought

Question: Explore the Earth's Atmosphere learning tool again. What causes the temperature to increase in the stratosphere?

Hint: Move the balloon to the stratosphere and go through the information on the right to find the answer.

Your Turn

Question: You have likely seen in the media references to the ozone layer and the layer where greenhouse gases are found. Where in the atmosphere are these two "layers" found? How are they different?
