Lesson 8
Key Idea 3: The Oceans' Carbon Cycle and Ocean Acidification

The ocean system is in a state of equilibrium which involves itself, the atmosphere, the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, and the biosphere.

Carbon forms the basis of life and constantly moves through cycles in nearly all components of the Earth. The oceans are a critical part of the carbon cycle, and it is estimated that approximately 90% of all non-sedimentary carbon is stored in ocean reservoirs. You were introduced to the Carbon Cycle in Lesson 6.

Open up the Carbon Cycle learning tool and click on "the Ocean Cycle". Before you move on, answer the following questions:

  • Where is the majority of the oceanic carbon stored?
  • Why does it take so long for carbon to cycle through the ocean system?
